Humanity's
Police Brutality Project
For this project we were supposed to find a controversial topic and use rhetoric tools to try and convince the other view on the topic to see where you were coming from. I chose the controversial topic police brutality. I learned that if police officers have violated your rights you can sue them. I also learned that democracy guides a lot of what a police officers job is. We worked on this project for a couple months and the final results of most everyone's projects were pretty flawless. I interviewed Officer Haulinbagh at the State patrol office to try and get his views on the topic. He had a lot to say but the parts that really got me were when he stated that policing is a costumer service job and that police officers are there to work for you. He also didn't deny that there were officers that were in the field for the wrong reasons, he stated "there are people in this profession that are here for the wrong reasons and don't have the right mindsets for the job, but just like any profession there are going to be bad apples. It is really difficult to find them all but I do believe in karma and they will eventually get whats coming to them. I think the main way to fix this problem is just simply education." Officer Haulenbagh teaches deputy's deescalation tactics and non deadly force training. I also interviewed Sergeant Sweetwood at Durango police department. Sergeant Sweetwood was ultimately a really great help and he stood by me throughout my whole project. He had very similar views as Officer Haulenbough. He stated that education on both sides was necessary and that he encouraged the public to look into the actual police reports on cases like Mike Brown and others. He also stated the same thing Haulenbough did and said "If you think a police officer violated your rights then we encourage you to sue us." The conclusion that my project came to was a poem. I presented on exhibition day and got no negative comments. The poem was about a friend of mine who fell victim to a crime and didn't appreciate officers and what they do for us until the night she needed them. The title of the poem is "They Hate Us Until They Need Us" The links will be down below. Throughout the whole project and all the research my political views really didn't change at all. I think that if people were more wiling to be disturbed and more willing to dive into things even if its hard then we would accomplish so much more than we ever thought we could.
